Negotiating Space: A Dialogue with Artists in the Community
Simon Fraser University
Room 1600 – Harbour Centre Campus
Presenters:
Laurynas Navidauskas and Jan Marontate (School of Communication, SFU), Elvy Del-Bianco (Arts Project,
Vancity), Valerie Arntzen and Jeffrey Boone (Eastside Culture Crawl Society) and artists featured in a video
about studio space (including Jane Wolsak, Maureen Sugrue, Richard Tetrault, and Elizabeth Barnes).
This salon presents research on creative workspaces in Vancouver undertaken in the past year by Laurynas Navidauskas, Jan Marontate and Elvy Del-Bianco with the collaboration of Valerie Arntzen (past executive director of the Eastside Crawl Society), Sandy Penn (former board member) and other participants in the Eastside Culture Crawl, including 10 artists featured in videotaped interviews in their studios.
The Eastside Culture Crawl is an annual event in which more than 300 artists open their studios to the public that celebrates the culture and creativity of communities in this neighbourhood. However, the landscape is changing as gentrification and increasing development in the downtown areas of Vancouver have impacted studio space availability and price. To maintain this cultural enclave in the heart of the city artists need to be able to work in studios that are functional and allow their creative process to unfold. The salon will focus on insights about how artists work to foster a creative community, and on their innovative strategies to maintain studio space and create art.
Following the Salon, there will be a screening of the entire video in the presence of the videographer, Laurynas Navidauskas in HC 1600. This project was made possible through support from Vancity and board member Bob Williams, the federal government of Canada’s MITACS Accelerate Internship Program and the School of Communication, Simon Fraser University.
